Allegedly, opposition to same-sex civil marriage is largely due to religious bigotry against couples of homosexual behavior.

  1. The Same-Sex marriage legal category includes other types of same-sex couples: for instance, any aunt and her adult niece who need to live together for financial reasons, same-sex room-mates in a college dorm who would like some extra tax deductions and shared health insurance, any two friends of the same sex, etc. How can it be that religion is opposed to these relationships becoming recognized by government, with corresponding benefits?

It would also be proper to ask "which religion?", and point out that everyone has a sort of religion, or philosophy, or value system, and thus the criticism could be turned around to state that support of same-sex civil marriage is rather due to some people applying their philosophy of life.
